The beginning of the New Year is a great time to reflect on the past year and take note of what you liked and disliked. It’s a time to decide how you want to grow in the coming year.

Many people make New Year’s Resolutions. However, the definitive nature of resolutions can lead to disappointment and perceived failure very quickly and most throw in the towel by February.

Instead of resolutions, I recommend setting intentions. An intention can be a goal and a purpose that you strive for to help you live the best version of yourself every day. It is setting a direction and purpose without expectation. It will help you focus and prioritize what is most important to you. It allows you to be more aware and mindful of current habits and what you want to change.

It will also allow you some wiggle room and grace. And to be appreciative for your successes, no matter how big or small.

When setting your intentions in the new year:

  • Sit and reflect on what is most important to you and brings you the most happiness; what fills you with a sense of purpose?

  • Write down your intentions and desires and keep it in a place you can read them often. You may even want to share it with someone close to you, if they will be supportive and keep you focused.

  • Pick only a few of these intentions to focus on. Having too many will spread your efforts too thin and may set you up for disappointment.

  • Create a short mantra that will serve as your daily reminder. Say it in the morning to start your day, as needed throughout the day, and as a reflection before you go to bed at night.

  • Trust yourself and just let it go. You have planted the seeds and now its time to enjoy the journey.

The 5 Second Rule

The hardest part of any task is getting started. I started using Mel Robbins’ “5 Second Rule” which has helped me take action! How it works: You have a thought of something you need to do to fulfill your intention and lack motivation. Count down backwards and before you get to 1, take action.

I’m using this 5 second rule when making food choices at home. It’s helping me recognize when I am making choices out of emotion or habit instead of hunger and mindfulness.

5-4-3-2-1…. You got this!
